Research Experience for Undergraduate- University of Tennessee

Please pass this information to your electrical engineering, computer engineering, and computer science undergraduates.  CURENT Engineering Research Center is looking for students interested in coming to the University of Tennessee during the summer to do research in the power systems and power electronics areas.  This is a paid research experience that includes a travel allowance and free housing.

University Scholars Program 2015-2016

Program Synopsis

The University Scholars Program introduces undergraduate students at the University of Florida to the exciting world of academic research. In the program, students work one-on-one with UF faculty on selected research projects. Through this initiative, students will take away an understanding of and appreciation for the scholarly method. A competition is held each spring within participating colleges for the University Scholars awards of a $1750 stipend. The program will consist of undertaking a full research project during the fall and spring semesters of the academic year, under the guidance of a faculty member. The University Scholars Program serves as an exceptional capstone to the academic careers of UF students.

Eligibility

Under College of Engineering guidelines, all undergraduate engineering students (1EG-5EG) with a minimum 3.0 cumulative UF GPA are eligible to participate in the University Scholars Program. Students must meet eligibility requirements at the time of application. Note that in order to be eligible, you must not earn your bachelor’s degree before Spring 2016. Awards will be made available to qualified students in all of the college’s departments.

Requirements to Participate

For the 2015-2016 University Scholars Program, students will conduct research during the 2015-2016 academic year. Upon completion of the project, students must write a properly formatted research paper which must be submitted to the UF Journal of Undergraduate Research (JUR) or other scholarly journal for publication. If selected, students must attend an orientation session at the Undergraduate Research Symposium on Tuesday, March 17, 2015.
Upon completion of the program, students are also required to give an oral presentation on their research at the University Scholars Symposium. (Date to be scheduled in 2016).

Applications

Applications for the University Scholars Program must be submitted through our online application no later than February 11, 2015. In addition to your applicant and faculty advisor information, the following documents must be submitted through your online application:

1. A 1-page typed summary of your proposed research project
2. Letter of Support from a Faculty Mentor
3. Resume

Steps to Apply

1. Seek out and identify a faculty member that is conducting research in an area of interest that would be willing to mentor you during the fall and spring semesters.
2. Prepare a 1-page summary of your proposed research project with the assistance of the faculty member.
3. Obtain a letter of support from the faculty member, stating that the mentor agrees to supervise the project and any other supporting information to assist the mentor’s department in choosing its funded projects.
4. Prepare your most recent resume.
5. Submit your University Scholars Program Online Application by the deadline.

Selection Process & Awards

Application Packets will be reviewed & ranked by your department and then submitted to the college for final review and selection by February 16, 2015.  The College will notify students, faculty mentors and departments of the awards by February 25, 2015. Each scholar will receive a $1750 stipend disbursed in two phases: Early Sept. ($750) and Spring ($1000).

Once you are selected

All students engaged in undergraduate research must be registered for 0-3 credit hours of EGN 4912. For more instructions on enrolling for EGN 4912, please contact your department advisors or the Undergraduate Research Coordinator at 204 Weil Hall or email ugresearch@eng.ufl.edu.

CHREC space research for undergrads

Dear EE Students,

UF is headquarters to the top national research center in its field, the NSF Center for High-Performance and Reconfigurable Computing (CHREC, pronounced "shreck", www.chrec.org).  CHREC is a partnership with >30 industry and government partners, many in the space industry.  Much in CHREC focuses upon space-based computing (i.e., processing, networking, systems, services,  apps, missions) for the International Space Station, satellites small and large, planetary rovers, and deep-space exploration, from Earth to space science and defense.  

 

One of our leading projects is CSP, the CHREC Space Processor (CSP).  The new computing concepts and technologies of CSP have been adopted by NASA to be featured on three upcoming NASA space missions, with more in the planning stages.  The CSP design and testing team consists mostly of juniors and seniors working on a variety of hardware, software, and hybrid tasks, from PCB design to FPGA design, from operating systems to software applications.  More info on CSP can be found here:

With graduation last semester of several of our CSP team members, we are recruiting a few more to join for 2015.  Here are the qualifications:

• Strong interest in space research with NASA and DOD
• US citizenship or permanent residency (necessary for NASA and DOD space research)
• Junior or senior status in ECE or CISE (i.e., EE, CpE, or CS major)
• Ability to commit at least 10 hours/week of time to CSP (at first as a volunteer; with success then on a funded slot)
• Completion of EEL3701C & 4744C w/ B+ grades or better
• Strong interest in digital design and/or PCB design and/or software design
• Preferred C/C++ and Linux experience

Nano REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates)

The Nano REU program at West Virginia University (WVU) will run from May 17-July 24, 2015.  This program is in its ninth year.  The research focus is nanotechnology with applications to early disease detection, biometrics, and energy efficiency.  Applicants should be rising sophomore, junior, or senior undergraduates students majoring in science, engineering, or mathematics.  Underrepresented minorities, women, persons with disabilities and veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces from primarily undergraduate institutions in WV and the Appalachian region are especially encouraged to apply.  Participants receive $5,000 stipend + room and board for 10-weeks of research in WVU faculty research labs.  Review of applications will begin on/after Feb. 13, 2015.  More information about the Nano REU program can be found in the attached flier. Welcome Back Spring 2015

Dear EE majors;
If you have not met me yet, I am the new undergraduate Academic Adviser for the EE major, Nicole Young.  My office located on the second floor of Larsen Hall, room 230.  For advisement, there are 2 ways for students to see or contact the EE adviser; 1) during walk-in hours Monday through Friday 10-12 pm and 1-4 pm and email address is undergradadvising@ece.ufl.edu.  Critical dates are listed below for the spring semester.  Walk-in hours may vary this semester. Please check the EE blog for updates.

EEL4905 and EGN4912 forms must be in my office for registration by Friday, January 10 by 4:00 pm. The form is located on the following website, http://www.ece.ufl.edu/content/forms.

EEL4948 and EEL4949 forms with offer letters should be in the office by Friday, January 10 by 4:00 pm.  The EEL4949 forms are completed through CRC and a copy is submitted to me.  For EEL4948 form are on the ECE website http://www.ece.ufl.edu/content/internships-and-co-op-experiences


For students that did not earn C or higher in EEL3923C in the fall semester. You are required to retake the course before moving on to the EEL4924C Design 2. Please drop EEL4924C from your schedule and adjust your spring schedule accordingly.  

For EE majors that are planning to graduate this semester Spring 2015, please send me an email to complete a graduation check at nicolet@ece.ufl.edu.  If we have already completed a graduation check, you are not required to send me an email.  Please complete your degree application by the January 9th.  The degree application is completed through ISIS website.


To receive honor chords you must meet a certain GPA for your upper division GPA. Upper division GPA can is located in the middle of your degree audit. If your upper division GPA is a minimum of 3.30 you are able to graduate with honors (Cum Laude). If your upper division GPA is minimum 3.50 or 3.80 and writing a thesis or completing research project, you are eligible to graduate Magna Cum Laude or Summa Cum Laude respectively.  If you are completing research project and/or thesis please send me an email with the title and the faculty adviser you are working with by January 15th.  If you planning to complete an thesis, I will send the direction handout to you once I receive an email from you.
