2) Complete your final graduation check by August 22 by noon.  Please send email to Nicole with the subject: Fall 2017 Grad Check
3) Apply for graduation by August 25th  by going through the Student Self Service page (https://student.ufl.edu/)
 Look to left side menu click on Certificate/Degree Application and follow the directions
4) Pass all classes
5) Complete ECE Exit Survey:  The ECE Exit Survey will be sent out by end of November. The exit survey  deadline date TBD
6) Complete all other exit surveys by the deadline date that those offices have posted
                Student Financial Aid and Affairs exit survey
                Registrar Office exit Survey (they will withhold your diploma if not completed)

RE: Last Day to Drop is July 28, 2017

Dear EE majors;
The last day to drop and withdrawal for Summer B/C 2017 is 1 week away (July 28, 2017).  If you are planning to drop a course for the summer 2017 semester, please submit your request through Student Initiated Drop/ Add page (https://student.ufl.edu/dropadd.html).  When you submit your request on the page.   Please check your drop page to see if you have drops available to use.  If you do not have any drops then you will be required to petition the college. Please read the general information about dropping a course and Bright Futures and Dropped courses.  I will not drop your courses until I receive your verification email.
If the course is your only Summer B or only Summer C course, you can complete a full semester withdrawal on your own. The process has the same results as a selective drop but does not use a UF-issued lower/upper-division drop. Instructions for a full semester withdrawal can be found at https://registrar.ufl.edu/services/withdrawals.html.

Withdrawal from Summer 2017 Semester (Withdrawal means all courses you are currently  registered in the current semester):
If the course is your only Summer B or only Summer C course, you can complete a full semester withdrawal on your own. The process has the same results as a selective drop but does not use a UF-issued lower/upper-division drop. To withdraw from the entire semester (ALL COURSES YOU ARE CURRENTLY ENROLLED), students are able to withdraw on their own.  To officially withdrawal from the semester, please use this web page (http://www.registrar.ufl.edu/services/withdrawals.html).  Please read the entire page for details for medical withdrawal and general procedures about withdrawing.  If you are withdrawing please let me know, via email. If you need to meet with me to discuss the reason why you are withdrawing, please come in during my walk-in hours or email me if you are unable to come in during that time.

I have used all my drops but I'm not doing well in course XYZ.  What should I do?
2)      Student must write a detailed explanation of why you are requesting an additional drop and any documentation that supports the letter.
3)      Must have a memo from your Academic Advisor(ME).  The letter will fully support, support with reservation or do not support based on what the student(s) has written in their letter and/or discussed in advising meeting. 
4)      The entire packet must be submitted by email to petitions@eng.ufl.edu

RE: Fall 2017 EEL4930 Microprocessor Applications 2-Seats are still available

The ECE department will be teaching a new course, EEL 4930- Microprocessor Applications II, during the Fall 2017.  The course description and objectives are listed below (the course syllabus is also attached here for your reference):

CATALOG DESCRIPTION
Implementation of a Real-Time Operating System on an ARM Cortex-M processor to create more robust, secure and complex microprocessor applications. Introduction to IoT applications with special topics covering security and trust.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

To understand the benefits of using an RTOS (Real-Time Operating System) on a microcontroller. Students will also learn about the architecture of ARM Cortex-M based microprocessors. Students will learn the basic components of an RTOS including both background and event threads, thread scheduling algorithms, inter-process communication, thread priority, and synchronization/mutual exclusion via semaphores. Students will also learn how to design embedded C software driver libraries for peripherals such as I2C RGB LEDs drivers and a resistive, pixel-based touchscreen. Students will conclude the course by interfacing with a CC3100 Wi-Fi chip to create an IoT application, with an emphasis on security.

This course has limited enrollment, so students will need to be approved by me, the course instructor, in order to enroll.  Those interested in enrolling will need to send an email directly to me (yier.jin@ece.ufl.edu) no later than 5pm on August 7th. with the following information:

The Office of Technology Licensing (OTL) at the University of Florida is responsible for transferring UF discoveries from the laboratory to the market to make the world a better place! OTL is a fast-paced, friendly, professional environment with many opportunities to learn and develop real-world skills in research, technical copy writing and marketing. If you geek out on technology and you’re dependable, goal-oriented and have a science or health related background, you could become a valued part of our team!

Systems, Signal Processing and Digital Signal Processing

Systems is any process that produces an output signal in response to an input signal. Continuous systems input and output continuous signals, such as in analog electronics. Discrete systems input and output discrete signals, such as computer programs that manipulate the values stored in arrays.

Signal processing is an enabling technology that encompasses the fundamental theory, applications, algorithms, and implementations of processing or transferring information contained in many different physical, symbolic, or abstract formats broadly designated as signals. It uses mathematical, statistical, computational, heuristic, and linguistic representations, formalisms, and techniques for representation, modelling, analysis, synthesis, discovery, recovery, sensing, acquisition, extraction, learning, security, or forensics

Digital signal processing (DSP) is the use of digital processing, such as by computers, to perform a wide variety of signal processing operations. The signals processed in this manner are a sequence of numbers that represent samples of a continuous variable in a domain such as time, space, or frequency.

Digital signal processing and analog signal processing are subfields of signal processing. DSP applications include audio and speech signal processing, sonar, radar and other sensor array processing, spectral estimation, statistical signal processing, digital image processing, signal processing for telecommunications, control of systems, biomedical engineering, seismic data processing, among others.

Digital signal processing can involve linear or nonlinear operations. Nonlinear signal processing is closely related to nonlinear system identification  and can be implemented in the time, frequency, and spatio-temporal domains.

The application of digital computation to signal processing allows for many advantages over analog processing in many applications, such as error detection and correction in transmission as well as data compression.  DSP is applicable to both streaming data and static (stored) data.
